6 TIPS TO EATING OUT SMART & FEELING GREAT

Whether you're doing strict keto, eating lower carb or just committing to Just Eating Real Food ( JERF)  , I thought I would share some quick tips to help you stay in ketosis, so you are not stressed when looking at the menu and more importantly so you feel great after eating!

1. Check out the menu before you arrive.

It always helps to be prepared. Before your night out, check out the restaurant's website and see what's on the menu. More often than not, the restaurant will have one or two dishes that either comply with the keto diet, many that are low carb or that can be altered to work for you. If you're worried about it- just give them a call beforehand to ask about accommodations. It's more normal than you think! 

2. Ask for substitutes.

For most restaurants, a typical plate setup will look something like this: meat, a vegetable, and a starchy carb like potatoes, rice, or quinoa. Your best bet is to nix the carb and double up on the veggies if the restaurant is willing to accommodate. Most restaurants are happy to do this for you- just politely ask and chances are high they will help you out! Leafy green vegetables like broccoli, kale, chard, or spinach have the lowest amount of carbohydrates per serving.

 3. Not all oils are created equal.

Of course, there's a lot of emphasis on consuming a lot of fat on a strict keto diet. There's less emphasis, however, on what kinds of fat to consume, although this is just as important. You want to aim for healthier fats such as avocado oil, olive oil, coconut oil, and grass-fed butter or ghee. Do your best to avoid highly processed oils like canola, soybean, and corn oil- to be honest, once your body is used to good oils, these cheap ones might make you feel sick. So don't be shy- ask your server what your food is actually cooked in and request better oils be used for your meal. Remember you are the advocate of your health. 

4. Look out for hidden sugars.

Sugar- ahhhh I always say that it is the devil! But really- so many studies are linking it to illnesses, obesity and disease it's crazy! Not only will it make you feel crappy, but sugar will also kick you out of ketosis if you're doing keto, so watch out for additions in foods like salad dressing, sauces, and even seasonings. To be safe, always ask for sauces or dressings on the side. 

5. Choose booze without the carbs

If you're drinking cocktails, don't spend your carbs on 'em! OMG save that for the bread...kidding...sort of! :) 

Try a sugar free margarita, a vodka La Croix, a low carb Moscow Mule, a keto-jito or a nice glass of pinot noir. 

Be sure to specify to the bartender exactly how you would like your drink prepared- there can be alot of sugary syrups added to drinks. Of course still ask for the paper umbrella because let's be real - they're silly and fun - as life should be! ;) 

Drink your ketones

We all have days where we over indulge a bit so be sure to stay in or slip back into ketosis by drinking pure therapeutic ketones! Get ketones into your body so you are thriving not just surviving! I love that ketones are good for everybody- from womb to tomb and whether you are doing a keto diet or not! Our bodies and brains THRIVE with ketones - they are the better fuel source! Whether you are doing keto, low carb or no diet at all , I suggest drinking one a day so you can experience a more optimal YOU! Better sleep. Better focus and mental clarity.
